>Stuart Whiteley - A Pen Portrait
Stuart Whiteley
Stuart was inspired to take up the cornet at the age of 10, by a rendition of Haydn’s Trumpet Concerto played by Harry Mortimer. Another early influence was the very popular Eddie Calvert. After taking lessons Stuart soon joined the St. Paul’s Church Orchetra and then his home town’s (Accrington) Military Band. He also spent some time with the Blackburn Concert Orchestra. An interest in all types of music found him playing with the Andy Nuttall Jazz Band and the Stuart Alan Dance Band as well as other groups on the local scene. His profession as an accountant led him to spend three years in Jamaica before returning and eventually becoming a partner in his own business. It was during this period that he was approached by Len Fletcher to form a new band. Hence, in 1984, he became a founder member of the Pendle Jazzmen. His fine trumpet playing, laid-back vocals and his pleasantly-engaging announcements made him very popular and did a great deal to help the band’s early success. It was a sad event when he left the area to work in the very north of Scotland - Thurso in Caithness. Because of the great distance involved his visits to Lancashire are few and far between. All the members of the Pendle Jazzmen are especially pleased to welcome him “back home” this evening! - Colin Mason
