L-R Peter Swensson, Ken Horton, Brian Woods, Geoff Parker,
Mal Horne,
The Savoy Jazzmen are now in
their 63rd year. They were formed in May 1960 performing their first job in the
Mardi Gras Jazz Club Liverpool on Tuesday 3rd May 1960. They also played
regularly in the Downbeat Jazz Club in the 1960's and there's a poster in the
World Museum advertising a session in the club with the Swinging Blue Jeans. The
band also played at the Cavern and there is a brick in the wall opposite the new
Cavern commemorating these sessions.
Bart Poole who retired from playing a number of years ago is the only surviving
member of the original band. Peter Swensson joined the band in October 1960 and has
played with the band ever since.
During the pandemic Brian Legan & John Rothwell left the band due to health
issues and sadly Derek Skepper passed away earlier this year.
We are pleased to announce that Brian Woods & Geoff Parker have joined the band.
Looking forward we have decided to perform as a five piece. Richard Knock does
however join us from time to time.
This photo was taken in the Sefton Park Palm House in June this year. We play
there on the first Tuesday of the month. Left to right :- Ken Horton, Peter
Swensson, Brian Woods, Geoff Parker, Mal Horne.
