John Rothwell
14/09/24 - We are sad to announce the death of JOHN ROTHWELL. He was the drummer with the Silver Bell band, the Red Rose Band and the Savoy Jazzmen. His Family funeral will be at Southport Crematorium on Monday 30th September at 2pm Please wear bright clothes. - Derek Galloway 14/09/24 - Whenever Barbara & I went to see the Silver Bell or Red Rose Brass Band, John always made a point of coming over to chat with us. He was a gentleman in the full sense of the word . He once had problems with his hearing such that he went totally deaf at one point, not good for a musician, but he went on to have a cochlear implant and carried on drumming - Fred Burnett 15/09/24 - John had been a member of the Savoy Jazzmen for over thirty years until he had to retire due to ill health. It has been a pleasure to have known him. We all know of his dedication to New Orleans Jazz but he was also a wonderful musician and a lovely gentlemen. He will be sorely missed. Condolences to his brother Duncan and family..
RIP John. 17/09/24 - I was very sad to hear of John’s passing. Over the years I played with John, depping in all those bands which you mention, and he also depped with my ‘Yarrow River’ band. He was a lovely guy and a very sensitive musician. Like so many others in recent years, he will be sadly missed in this wonderful jazz world in which we are all privileged to take a part.
R.I.P. John 17/09/24 So sorry to hear of John's demise. We have known him since he joined the Savoy Jazzmen over 20 (?) years ago. He was a good friend , a good musician and always good company. We visited him a few times at his home in Crossens, Southport, and were amazed at his collection of 'Rupert Bear' books and memorabilia. Besides his enthusiasm for New Orleans jazz, he was an avid Preston North End fan, and the late Tom Finney was his idol. Before our last visit, on the 'phone he said that he would give us a few of his jazz CD's from his vast collection. We were 'gob-smacked' to find that amounted to 140 ! (George Lewis, Louis Nelson, Percy Humphrey, Ory et al.) A lovely man, who will be sorely missed by his brother & family, friends and all the jazz fraternity that knew him.
R.I.P. John.
