So sorry to hear of the loss of John Higham.  Many happy sessions shared with him and friends in Liverpool in the heyday. RIP John.

Sad news about Roger: lovely chap with an equally fine technique and a fund of unusual little-heard tunes. Much missed on the NW scene. My condolences to brother John and family.

So sad to hear of Roger Higham’s demise. Roger made a huge contribution to the Merseyside jazz scene over many years as trumpeter with mainly the WirrOrleans and Peninsula bands. He was in Al McDowall’s ‘WirrOrleans’ at the United Powers pub in Tithebarn Street, Ma Boyle’s Oyster Bar (Tower Garden) & Sam’s Bar (Tithebarn Street) for some great times, when every Wednesday evening was like a family party ! Roger was known for introducing many unusual tunes to the band’s varied repertoire. A typical ’UP’ celebration was the 50th anniversary of VE day in 1995, with the presence of ‘General Patton’, a bearded lady ARP warden, and Roger in a German officers outfit ! Roger also took part in many band parades, many with the late Tony Davis’ Wirral Marching Jazz Band and many ‘jazz’ funerals. Many thanks , Roger, for happy times. Our condolences to brother John and all of Roger’s family.

Terry Birkinhead.

I first heard Roger in 1955, playing alongside his brother John in an excellent Liverpool University jazz band. In the next year or two I often heard him at clubs around Liverpool in the great Ralph Watmough band. Roger is another great guy who will be missed.

19/04/22 - Roger and John have been our good friends since early days playing together in the Liverpool University Rhythm Club Band in the fifties. Since then I have spent many happy evenings playing trombone, with Roger on trumpet, playing with the Peninsula Jazzmen in Heswall, sometimes also at Ma Boyle's, and with marching bands and at funerals.  I always enjoyed the musical rapport with Roger and Dave Dixson on our front line, with the intuitive ability to answer each other's riffs and phrases.  Although I am not playing myself any more, whilst still with the band, I really missed Roger when he became ill.  Jackie and I are so sorry to hear of his death and send our sincere condolences to John and the family.
