Fred Boggan RIP March 2024

23/03/24 - News has come in of the death of drummer Fred Boggan. Fred, who I think was from Merseyside, depped and played with several band including Harlem Hot Stompers (historical version), The Blue Mags (pictured at Llandudno), Jazz Rag and the Merseysippi's. Fred joined the Harlem Hot Stompers in October 2015. His musical background started on joining the army at age 17 as a bandsman to study music, cornet and percussion. His army duties included being the Regimental Trumpet Player. He then worked in big bands and theatrical pit orchestras and played for many years with the Blue Magnolia Jass Orchestra.

Very sad news, Fred depped with the Original Panama JB many times, always cheery, helpful and a very good drummer.  Such a shame.

It was with much sadness that the members of the Merseys heard about the passing of a good friend of ours – Fred Boggan, a very good friend for many years. I played with him for many years with several bands including with the Merseys and with a band that Harold Troughton used to have known as the Dixie Kings. He will be much missed by his good friends in the Merseyside area. Our condolences from us to his wife Sonia.

So sorry to hear about Fred’s passing. I have played many times over the years with Fred in a few different bands. He was a great drummer and singer with a great personality and a real nice guy. He’ll be missed by all who knew him.

RIP Fred, unfortunately we never met, but to all of us who played our music on various different instruments over the years, it matters not. I first joined the Harlem Hot Stompers on Sousaphone somewhere around 1969, very happy days and very privileged to play with some of the masters of the day. The story goes on to cover many years, many bands, many idioms, and quite a few instruments, but that is who we are. So Fred, you are in my thoughts! Now as a much older guy, I am playing percussion trap kit , with another Iconic band. And so we all move on and will maybe all play together again one day when the fee doesn’t matter
