A guide to using Google Drive to store and/or share your music collection
In order to use Google Drive, it stands to reason you must have a free Google Account. If you have a Gmail email address, you already have one, move to the next paragraph, otherwise, to get an account, go to www.google.com and click on Sign In at the top right hand corner when you will be asked for an email address. If you don't see the Sign In button chances are you already have a Google Account and didn't know it, Click on Create Account which appears further down. You will be asked to choose between For Myself or To Manage My Business so choose Myself. You can now create a Google Account using your current email address, or create a unique Gmail one for your Google Account, although you may be surprised at how many attempts it will take before you choose one that hasn't already been taken. Any problems click here for more help Now you have a Google Account you will be amazed at the number of Google Apps that are available to you, Gmail being the obvious one, and you'll see the link to Gmail every time you go to www.google.com or www.google.co.uk you can sign in at either address. Once you do that, the Sign In option will no longer be there and you may see a circle at the top right now with a single letter instead (often your first name initial), and that indicates that your are signed in when you visit the Google web page. Also at the top right of the page you will see 9 dots formatted into a 3 x 3 square, so click on that and you will see what having a Google account has opened up for you. Scroll down to the bottom of the list and you will see an option to see More from Google. I use the Calendar App daily because you can set up annual reminders for things like birthdays and anniversaries and even have the calendar send you a reminder email a few days before. This web site's What's On also runs on Google Calendar. You can click and drag any of those Apps so that the ones you want to use are at the top, For example, as we are going to use Drive, find it and drag it to the top row. Now Click on it to take you there. OK so to next upload your MP3 file that you would like to share, click on New on the left and then click on File Upload and Windows file manager will appear allowing you to navigate your computer and upload the file you wish to share. Click Open, and it should upload. You should then see an icon which looks like a pair of headphones, Right click on that and you should see a few options open to you. To share the file, choose Share or Get Link, when you will be able to copy the link, but first make sure the option is not set to Restricted, if it is, change it to "Anyone with the Link". Click on Copy Link, and then prepare your email and when you want to insert the link into the body of the email, right click and select Paste. Now having sent someone the link, they will find when they click on it, that there's a Play Icon and a Download Icon with obvious consequences when you click on them. They do not need to have a Google account to do this. Google Drive is free but there is a limit of 15Gb and it is shared across any other Apps like Mail and Photos, but there is nothing to stop you from setting up yet another account using a new email address which Google will supply you with (a Gmail one). To do that you need to log out of your current Google account, and then you will get the option to Sign In, but click on Create Account again as in the first paragraph. After that you can log into either account to upload music. Good luck, and any problems, contact me Fred |
