06/01/15 - Dear Fred, It's with great regret I have to let you know that Cliff Barker has passed away suddenly. He played Banjo with the Panama Jazz Band many years ago before forming The Mathew Street Ragtime Jazz Band who enjoyed a long 13 year gig at the Marlborough in Slater Street Liverpool City centre. Cliff depped with many local bands and his style of banjo was enjoyed by many jazzers. Cliffs funeral is
on 22nd January at 11am Landican Cemetery. 08/01/15 - I was very shocked and saddened to learn of Cliff Barker's sudden passing. It was way back in 1987 when Cliff invited me to join his recently formed Mathew Street Ragtime Jazz Band, which at that time actually had a residency in Mathew St itself, and from then I spent 16 very happy years with the band. Cliff led from the back, with a strong, driving banjo style which made the whole band swing like crazy. We also had some great times socially. I have treasured memories of attending the Keswick Jazz Festival in it's early years with Cliff and Stella, walking and bussing to all the venues to hear as many bands as we could, and sitting in at the free jam sessions. My deepest sympathies go to Stella and all Cliff's family. Phil Yates.
