24/11/21 - News has been relayed to me
from his friend and neighbour, that Cyril Wroe, well known past band
leader & musician, passed away this morning at the age of 89. Cyril led
the Festival Jazzmen on the Fylde Coast for
many years, and led a band that we visited regularly at Uncle Tom's
cabin when this site first started. We have been friends with Cyril &
Nora Wroe since the 90's, and although Cyril had been undergoing
dialysis treatment for some time, his death comes as a big shock. I
spoke to him just a few weeks ago when he rang to offer me the loan of a
CD that he had put together featuring some of the great names of British
jazz that not only played with his band but stayed with them overnight.
I remember that Cyril was a salesmen selling pressure vessels when I
first knew him, and he never missed an opportunity to visit Nat Gonella
whenever he was in the area of Gosport. He was a member of the Royal
Engineers Association and invited us to one of their events on a couple
of occasions. - Fred Burnett
