So sorry to hear this news. I always knew him as a dedicated New Orleans clarinet player and on the few occasions I had of playing with him in the Savoy Jazz Band his musical talent was obvious. A few years ago he presented me with file containing copies of the Red Book ragtime library most of which were quite new to me.

He will be much missed. My condolences to his family.

Oh dear Brian gone, I knew him well for years when The Red Rose band was doing parades. We played next to each other, me on alto, Brian on clarinet.

Great days, farewell Brian RIP.

I'm very sorry to hear this bad news. Although I had not met up with Brian since pre-Covid days, It was always a pleasure to play alongside him, particularly in trios or quartets. He was also an excellent travelling companion on the few journeys we made together for gigs further afield. My condolences and best wishes to his family and friends. RIP Brian

I always loved Brian's playing. His essential jazz purity and musical good taste reminded me of Ken Colyer, and on the all-too-few occasions I played alongside him I remember feeling very privileged. How I wish I'd at least heard him play more recently!

I unfortunately never met Brian, but that lovely rendering of 'Old Rugged Cross' brought back memories of my dear old Dad. He would be 131 if he was still with us. Dad only sang two songs whilst in the bathroom, one was this and the other 'Ol' Man River'. Made my day and love to his family.

So very sad to hear the news about Brian. I had a long conversation with him just two weeks ago and had arranged to call to see him when I was in the UK for a few days last week but when I rang, his daughter told me that he had been taken into hospital.  I played with him on many occasions and was in contact over the years while he embarked on his many researches. We liaised on his Ray Burke opus although I never saw the final product but I have an early draft of the Lee Collins discography and a June 2011 version (64x A4 typed pages) of his very detailed “Those Other New Orleans Musicians”.

I hope that these opuses together with his other work and many archives of information will find a good home.

Here's Brian playing sax with a trumpetless Savoy at Widnes in July 2017.
I think this was the last time I played with him.

03/11/22 - Yesterday , the jazz musicians of the NorthWest paid a warm and worthy tribute to reed player Brian Legan of the Savoy Jazzmen (for 30 years) at his funeral at Southport crematorium. A band of 17 jazz musicians – including 5 trumpets ! – made a wonderful tribute to Brian, who has participated in many similar sad occasions. They came from as far afield as Congleton, Heswall, Skipton and the Lake District to pay their respects to Brian, who also played with the Tuxedo, Silver Bell and Red Rose bands, and ‘depped’ with many others.

Our condolences go to daughters Emma, Fiona and their families.

R.I.P, Brian.
Terry Birkinhead.
