Al Wood
Al began his musical career in Blackpool in 1959. A superb multi-instrumentalist, he plays all the saxophones, trombone and trumpet. Over the years he has worked with many bands including Maynard Ferguson, Johnny Howard, Ken Mackintosh, the BBC Big Band and with such artists as Rob McConnell, Derek Watkins, Nat Adderley and Dionne Warwick. Prior to joining the staff of the Leeds College of Music he was with the BBC Northern Radio Orchestra. Al is now Assistant Head of the Performance Studies, teaching saxophone and trombone as well as’ running the Big Band. He has twice been winner of the BBC Big Band Competition Prize for Best Soloist. He is a stalwart of the Burnley Jazz Summer Schools where he has acted as tutor for many years. h addition to all his teaching commitments he still continues to be active on the local jazz scene. Band members and those in the audience were thrilled by his performance last time and he makes a welcome return by overwhelming demand.
