Annie Cousins Annie's Saints & Sinners Jazz Band
Annie took piano lessons from
an early age. It wasn't until later in her life that she
took up an interest in New Orleans Jazz. She decided to
take jazz piano lessons at a local college and eventually
formed her own band in 1997 which she called Annie's Saints
& Sinners. The majority of the band was made up from well
known musicians in the area. The band took up residency for
a short spell at the Edgerton Arms in Chelford. They then
moved on to play a monthly spot at Macclesfield Treacle
Market which they still do, attracting large crowds whatever
the weather. Other sessions take place at Didsbury and
Eagley Jazz Clubs.
As a former school teacher, Annie decided to try and educate
children at local primary schools by giving jazz
appreciation classes. She taught them about the origins of
the music then had her full band play the music. Her
musicians were tasked with discussing the intricacies of
their instruments with the children Over the years,
Annie's band made visits to 30 schools in the northwest; all
in all, a no mean feat!
Unfortunately, following a fall some time ago, Annie has
been restricted to a wheelchair. Playing has become
difficult being helped on and off her piano stool by Roger,
her husband. Regrettably, in June this year, Annie decided
to retire from the band. Her last performance was at
Didsbury Jazz Club on the 29th August. She received a great
send off from not only the band, but members of the
audience. The band will continue to operate under the name
of Saints & Sinners managed by Mike Mason trumpet and Andy Wagstaff banjo/guitar.
Happy retirement Annie. Andy Wagstaff |
