Alan Radcliffe

I’m sure your members will be sorry to learn of the death of Alan Radcliffe, aged 92, on August 14th 2021.

Alan was founder and leader of Manchester-based “The Saints” jazz band from the late 1940s until leaving the band in 1975, during which time it had established itself as among the finest of the British jazz revival, playing at the Royal Festival Hall before the (then) Princess Elizabeth, supporting Louis Armstrong and his All Stars on their 1956 tour, recording with EMI and Parlophone (under the watchful eye of George Martin) and playing innumerable concerts across the north west.

I know he is fondly remembered by many who heard the band at the time and who still listen to CD transfers of the original 78rpm recordings that they made. But for Alan’s modest, self-effacing nature he would undoubtedly have made one of the most popular jazz clarinetists of his day. As it was, he was content to be the best he could be in the band he founded in the late 1940s with his school friends.

Best wishes,
Tim Atkinson
