The Savoy Jazzmen The
Liverpool-based Savoy Jazzmen came into being in May 1960 and celebrated their
50th anniversary in 2010. Peter Swensson, who plays string bass and sousaphone
with the band, joined the band in July 1960 following his demob from the
Lancashire Fusiliers and has played continuously with the band ever since. Cornet
player Tommy Orrett, a great character as well as a first-rate cornet player who
doubled on clarinet and alto sax, sadly passed away in 1995. Two other founder
members, banjoist Reg Aveyard and trombonist Bart Poole, were still playing
regularly with the band until earlier this year. Sadly Reg passed away and Bart
has had to stop playing for health reasons. In order to cope with their schedule
the band has had a collective personnel for many years with the help of some of
the finest players in the northwest. Our trumpeter is Derek Skepper who joined
the band following the death of Roy Potts. John Rothwell on drums and our banjoist Mal Horne have enabled us to revive many of the
early jazz classics that had slipped from our repertoire. They are valued
members of the band. The two other band members, trombonist Ken Horton, and
clarinet/saxophone player Brian Legan, have been playing with the band for
considerably more than 20 years.
